Data Centre Solutions
What is a Data Centre
A data center is a facility used to house computer systems and
associated components, such as telecommunications and storage systems.
It generally includes redundant or backup power supplies, redundant
data communications connections, environmental controls (e.g., air
conditioning, fire suppression) and security devices.A data centre can
be considered the brain of a company; without it business can cease to
communicate, perceive, remember and create. The end result is a
business that ceases to function. Every organization has a data centre,
although it might be referred to as a server room or even a computer
closet. In that sense, data centre may be synonymous with network
operations centre, a restricted access area containing automated
systems that constantly monitor server activity, Web traffic, and
network performance.
Companies rely on their information systems to run their
operations and businesses successfully. If a system becomes unavailable,
company operations may be impaired or stopped completely. It is
necessary to provide a reliable infrastructure for IT operations, in
order to minimize any chance of disruption. Information security is
also a concern, and for this reason a data centre has to offer a secure
environment which minimizes the chances of a security breach. A data
centre must therefore keep high standards for assuring the integrity
and functionality of its hosted computer environment. All data centres
are unique, but they all share the same mission: to protect your
company's valuable information.
Meeting Today's Data Centre Challenges
Data centre operations are being challenged as never before.
Demands are increasing, facilities are crowded and aging, and
management costs are spiraling. These challenges can keep you from
reaching your goals of growing your business, reducing costs and
minimizing risks.
Modern servers, in order to handle the sheer magnitude of
today's data, have grown larger, denser, hotter and take up much more
power. IDC estimates that the total power and cooling bill for servers
in the U.S. costs a whopping $14 billion a year, and if the current
trends persist, the bill is going to rise to $50 billion by the end of
the decade. It's clear the data centre is a major consumer of power,
not to mention a major contributor to a company's energy bill.
Increasing energy efficiency in the data centre is not only a necessary
step toward becoming more environmentally sound, it's a smart way to
cut costs. Technology has created an effective way to tackle this
problem with virtualization - server consolidation and containment -
that can help companies place multiple workloads on the same server,
allowing for fewer physical servers and thus lowering the electricity
and cooling requirements.Whatever the size of the business, customers
are today transforming their data centre from a standalone collection
of physical assets into a virtual and adaptive infrastructure designed
to rapidly meet changing business needs.
Meeting the Data Centre needs
Today's server rooms and data centres are challenging
environments to control and manage. IT staffs need to be experts in all
types of equipment that make up today's data centres, including
servers, storage, routers, switches and other devices. They are charged
with maintaining operations performance in multiple locations with
limited resources - all while keeping costs down. Also, today,
businesses look to a virtualized data centre to help shift business
initiatives toward growth and innovation needed to be competitiveWith
the rapid deployment of new technologies comes increasing complexity
and a need for agility that requires companies to find solutions for
managing their data centres with the highest degree of efficiency and
effectiveness. To meet this demand, IT vendors are providing businesses
